Fortescue is the technology group accelerating commercial decarbonisation through heavy industry, rapidly, profitably and globally.
Our iron ore operations include the Chichester and Western Hubs and our Iron Bridge magnetite mine in the Pilbara, Western Australia. As a major supplier of iron ore to the Chinese steel industry, we have shipped more than two billion tonnes of iron ore since 2008.
We are leading the green industrial revolution, building a global portfolio of green energy projects and green technology solutions, while also leading the global effort to decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors. This includes developing and acquiring the technology and energy supply to decarbonise our Australian iron ore operations and achieve real zero terrestrial emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by 2030.
This economic expansion has fostered a pivotal relationship with China Baowu Steel Group, the world’s largest steel producer, which has emerged as Fortescue’s primary customer.
Fortescue’s journey with China Baowu began in 2008 with our maiden shipment of 180,000 tonnes of iron ore. By 2024, this collaboration reached a significant milestone as Fortescue celebrated shipping two billion tonnes of iron ore to China.
Looking forward, Fortescue has set ambitious emissions reduction targets, aiming for real zero terrestrial emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by 2030 and net zero Scope 3 emissions by 2040.
Collaboration on green energy and technology forms a cornerstone of Fortescue’s strategy, including strategic partnerships with global stakeholders like China Baowu. In June 2023, Fortescue and China Baowu signed a Memorandum of Understanding to explore low-carbon steelmaking technologies and deepen cooperation on decarbonisation efforts, underscoring both companies' commitment to combating global climate change.
Fortescue’s evolution from iron ore supplier to strategic partner reflects not only China’s economic trajectory but also a shared commitment to sustainability and technological innovation in the face of environmental challenges.
