Royal Poly Products brings home the bacon for Aussie exports

21 November 2024

Royal Poly Products developed its first commercially viable product less than 3 years ago and only started exporting in 2023.

In the past year, the company achieved a revenue growth of more than 100%. Gaining instant traction in its target markets, Royal Poly Products has been recognised as the 2024 joint winner of the Emerging Exporter award category at the Australian Export Awards. A focus on product innovation, strong relationship building, and diversified services has driven the young company’s international success to date.

The royal treatment

The family-owned business is Australia’s first Pipeline Inspection Gauge (known in the industry as a pig) manufacturer.

‘As Australia’s first manufacturer of locally made pipeline pigs, we leverage our engineering expertise to deliver tailored solutions,’ says Sahil Thathu, Director at Royal Poly Products.

‘We don't just manufacture pigs—we advise on the right tools, how to use them, and the outcomes clients can expect. This ensures our clients receive the best possible results for their specific needs. ‘Our engineering services and equipment rental options further enhance our competitive edge by providing comprehensive solutions for our customers.’

Making inroads in Malaysia

One of the most exciting international business outcomes for Royal Poly Products in the past year was its successful expansion into the Malaysian market. A strategic partnership with a local distributor boosted market presence and drove substantial growth in international sales.

‘The Malaysia expansion led to a six-figure increase in international revenue, positively impacting our bottom line,’ says Thathu. ‘We secured a multi-year contract with a major energy company, establishing us as a key player in the region.’

Eyes on Southeast Asia

Success in Malaysia provides a blueprint for Royal Poly Products’ expansion into other Southeast Asian regions.

‘The partnership strategy has positioned us as a competitive and reliable player in the Southeast Asian market,’ says Thathu. ‘We recently established a distributorship in Jakarta, Indonesia. ‘We are exploring further opportunities in neighbouring countries, leveraging our Malaysian success to attract new partners.’

Global inclusivity bolsters trade relationships

Royal Poly Products’ international partnerships are conducted with a strong commitment to ethical practices and cultural sensitivity. ‘For example, we changed the name of our product to respect local customs in the Middle East, where it’s called "Scrapers." This highlights the need to listen and understand local preferences,’ says Thathu. ‘Building trust takes time, and adjusting strategies based on cultural nuances is essential for success.’

By prioritising excellence and collaboration, Royal Poly Products hopes to inspire others in the industry to embrace best practices while also making a positive impact.

New growth markets target infrastructure development

Royal Poly Products’ next target markets include Southeast Asia, Saudi Arabia, Africa and Europe. These regions are experiencing significant growth in infrastructure development and energy projects. This sees increased demand for reliable pipeline solutions.

‘The proximity to our current operations and established relationships with local partners make Southeast Asia an ideal market for expansion,’ says Thathu.

Royal Poly Products also plans to establish local offices in Malaysia and Indonesia. ‘This will enhance our market presence and provide better support to local clients,’ says Thathu.

Domestic growth is also a focus for Royal Poly Products. ‘We’ve shown our capability globally, but now we need local companies to back an Australian-made solution,’ says Thathu. ‘You’re not only getting top-quality products, but also investing in Australia’s industry, workforce and future innovation.’

Investing in R&D

Over the next few years, Royal Poly Products will upgrade its facilities and equipment to increase its manufacturing and exporting capacity. The company will also continue to heavily invest in R&D to develop advanced pipeline products like its upcoming Smart Foam Technology for Pipeline Inspection – The Quokka™.

Staying local supports sustainability

Royal Poly Products takes sustainability seriously. The company manufactures its pipeline products from low-free-TDI and mercury-free polyurethane. This ensures its products are safer for the environment and for those using them.

All its raw materials for making polyurethane are sourced within Australia. This allows for high-quality, sustainable procurement. ‘This local sourcing reduces our carbon footprint and supports the domestic economy,’ says Thathu.

Fostering a positive workplace culture

Beyond making and exporting premium products, Thathu wants Royal Poly Products to be built on a culture that fosters a happy and motivated workforce.

‘By prioritising excellence and collaboration, Royal Poly Products hopes to inspire others in the industry to embrace best practices while also making a positive impact,’ he says. ‘Ultimately, I want Royal Poly Products to be recognised not just for our products, but for our commitment to quality, sustainability and employee fulfillment.’

Australian Export Awards recognition provides significant motivation

Thathu learned about the Australian Export Awards at the AOG Energy 2024 exhibition through the Austrade team. ‘After sharing our growth story, an Austrade representative encouraged us to apply for this prestigious award,’ he says.

‘As a young family-owned business, receiving this recognition is not only a testament to our hard work but also a significant motivation for our team. It highlights our dedication to excellence and our commitment to growth in the export market.’

Contributing to the growth of the export community

Thathu would ‘strongly encourage’ other exporters to apply for the Australian Export Awards in the future. ‘These awards provide valuable recognition and visibility, showcasing the achievements of Australian businesses on a global scale,’ he says. ‘Participating in the process can also help you gain insights into best practices, learn from peers, and ultimately contribute to the growth of the export community.’
